Partial & Complete Denture Options
Dentures are removable dental appliances that are used to replace missing teeth. Whether you have lost some or all of your teeth as a result of tooth decay, gum disease, or an injury, a denture can restore your natural tooth function and appearance. At Orchard Family Dental, we provide dentures for our patients in the Mansfield, TX area.
Advantages of Dentures
In addition to interfering with your ability to eat and speak normally, missing teeth can result in sagging facial muscles, causing you to look older. Dentures resemble natural teeth and help to fill out your face, restoring the appearance of your smile.
Dentures are used to:
- Improve chewing and digestion
- Improve speech
- Enhance the smile and facial shape
- Replace several teeth (partial dentures)
- Replace all missing teeth in an arch (complete dentures)
Two Types of Dentures
There are options available for either partial or complete dentures. Partial dentures are used when some teeth are missing to replace the teeth and prevent the remaining teeth from drifting out of place. Our Mansfield dentistry practice uses dentures made with an improved flexible Valplast material for most patients. These metal free partials are an affordable solution that offers better comfort, compared to other methods.
Complete dentures are used to replace all of the missing teeth. These can either be immediate or conventional. Conventional dentures are crafted after the remaining natural teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has had time to heal, usually between four and six weeks. Immediate dentures are placed immediately after the teeth have been removed, so you won’t need to go without teeth during the healing period. Adjustments generally need to be made to your immediate dentures after the gum tissue has healed.
The Treatment Process
You can expect to visit your Mansfield dentist for a few appointments over a period of several weeks. The process begins by taking impressions and measurements, which are used to craft a custom denture for your mouth. At “try in” appointments, the dentist will make sure the fit, color, and shape are just right to provide the most natural appearance and comfort for each patient. Although it is common for patients to experience a bit of discomfort and trouble eating and speaking at first, this quickly fades, as you become accustomed to the denture.
You will be given care instructions during your final visit. Dentures are durable and you can expect the appliance to last for many years. You can maximize the life of your dentures with good hygiene and regular dental visits, but dentures do need to be repaired, adjusted, or remade from time to time, as a result of normal wear.
